Students interested in nominating for a position can then submit their details and candidate statement through the relevant online or hard copy nomination form, in some cases an online form may be more accessible on a PC or tablet rather than a mobile handheld device. They may also submit a photograph. Nominations must be received by the closing date, and all students who nominate themselves or are nominated by another party, must meet the eligibility criteria on the day nominations close. To be eligible for any of the available positions, you must be a current student as determined by a current enrolled status i.e. an active study path.
Student Leadership takes many forms, whether volunteering, running clubs & societies or through elected representation. All these roles give you the opportunity to join training sessions, network with people in industry, and engage peer-to-peer mentoring. The benefits of Student Leadership are determined to how much you engage with the programs offered by Your Student Union, and what your goals are as a student.
As a Student Director of the WSUSU Board, you will be expected to oversee the strategic direction of WSUSU while ensuring that the Student Union complies with legal and regulatory obligations. You will need to attend meetings with the board and communicate regularly, reading emails, documents, and developing a working understanding of WSUSU governance. All Student Directors will receive mandatory training on all their duties and will be supported by staff and fellow board members.
SRC Executives are expected to engage with students to gather feedback on student experiences and raise issues to create systemic change within the University. The SRC will have a working relationship with both the WSUSU Board and the University to create meaningful changes for students.
There are 4 roles within the SRC executives.
The SRC President chairs SRC meetings, represents the SRC to the Board and student body and ensures SRC reports are prepared.
The SRC Vice-President supports the President, acts as Chair in their absence, and coordinates campus engagement.
The SRC General Secretary oversees agendas, minutes and communication in coordination with WSUSU staff.
The SRC Welfare Officer leads macro advocacy on student welfare, housing, food security and wellbeing initiatives.
While previous experience and being familiar with meeting processes, moving motions, organising a team, organising campaigns and meeting administration would be useful to have, no previous experience is required to be eligible for these roles.
Provided you are an enrolled student and abide by the expectations outlined in the Elections Handbook, you are eligible for these positions. Mandatory training is provided at the start of the year for Student Leaders and attendance is required and expected. Additional training throughout the year as needed or requested.
Being a Student Leader gives the opportunity to gain skills rarely covered in a classroom. Professional networking, public speaking, project management, communication skills, and experience in advocating for your peers at different levels.
Student Leadership gives you the opportunity to create lasting change within Western Sydney University. Your Student Leaders have given students free printing across campuses, occasional day care for students, and the formation of Your Student Union, triggered by a General Meeting of Students in 2023.
Student Board Directors and SRC voting members receive a small honorarium for their work to reimburse any costs throughout their term. This honorarium aims to support students with cost of living while they are in their roles.
Elections are held yearly, often through September and October.
A Notice of Elections will be sent to all students to their student email address when elections are due to begin.
Clubs, Equity Collectives, and SRC-Sub-committees’ leadership are determined internally to the group through an Annual General Election (AGM). They are not included in the elections described on this page.
Students can get involved in the Student Representative Committee or can volunteer and assist Student Representatives with various projects or campus events and activities, as well as other programs that WSUSU offers. To express your interest in volunteering click here.
The Student Union only runs elections for roles that sit within it’s governance and student leadership framework.
